An Open Letter to SHRM
An Open Letter to SHRM
Last week, SHRM National issued an important announcement indicating a shift in their approach to DEI efforts. SHRM is adopting the acronym I&D, instead of IE&D. In their statement, they indicate that “this strategic decision underscores our commitment to leading with inclusion as the catalyst for holistic change in workplaces and society.” SHRM states “by emphasizing inclusion-first, we aim to address the current shortcomings of DE&I programs, which have led to societal backlash and increasing polarization.”
In light of SHRM’s recent policy change to remove equity as a prominent category in the DEI initiative, we feel it is necessary to address this in an open and honest dialogue. We have nothing but the utmost respect for the SHRM organization and the significant benefits it brings to the HR community at large. However, we are concerned that this step could potentially undermine the collective progress we have made thus far.
In recent years, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have become central to the mission of many organizations, seeking to create environments where all individuals feel valued and included. While diversity and inclusion are often the focus, equity is the critical component that ensures everyone has access to the same opportunities and is essential for achieving the goals of DEI initiatives. We should think of DEI as three pillars sustaining the foundation of any healthy workplace. Removing any of the pillars and the foundation is weakened.
Equity plays a crucial role in ensuring that all individuals have fair access to opportunities and resources. By removing it from the forefront of the DEI framework, we are concerned that the focus on creating truly inclusive and equitable workplaces may be diminished. Equity is not just an abstract principle but a tangible goal that requires deliberate and continued effort.
We urge SHRM to reconsider this decision and to continue to champion the full scale of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Together, we can continue to build workplaces that not only embrace diversity but also ensure that every individual has the support and resources they need to succeed. As we continue to advance DEI efforts, prioritizing equity will ensure that our workplaces are truly inclusive and just for everyone. We look forward to engaging in a productive dialogue on this matter.
